VOLCLAY® Bentonite Soil Sealants

Versatile Containment Solution

VOLCLAY bentonite soil sealants are a granular and powder sodium bentonite that provides economical, low permeability soil liners that can be used in a wide variety of containment applications. When VOLCLAY bentonite soil sealants are mixed with soil and hydrated, they expand fifteen times in volume, forming a mechanical bond with surrounding soils and filling the voids between the soil particles. This creates a barrier that effectively stops further seepage through the soil and decreases the permeability of soil by several orders of magnitude. Bentonite can withstand desiccation, hydration and freeze-thaw cycling without losing its sealing ability.

How it does it

When VOLCLAY bentonite soil sealants are mixed with soil and hydrated, they expand to 15 times its volume, forming a mechanical bond with surrounding soils and filling the voids between the soil particles. This creates a barrier that effectively stops further seepage through the soil and decreases the permeability of soil by several orders of magnitude.

Because of the high swelling capacity of VOLCLAY bentonite sealants, only small amounts are needed to reduce the hydraulic conductivity of the on-site soils.

Advantages:

  • Bentonite can withstand desiccation, hydration, and freeze-thaw cycling without losings its sealing ability.
  • High swelling capacity of VOLCLAY bentonite soil sealants reduces amount needed to lower the hydraulic conductivity of the onsite soils.
  • Offered in several formulations, allowing for use in a wider variety of applications.
  • With access to the largest bentonite reserves in the world, our product manufacturer is able to provide the most consistent and highest quality soil sealants.

Applications:

  • Reservoirs
  •  Secondary containment
  • Agricultural waste containment
  • Ponds
  • Slurry trenching
  • Wastewater treatment lagoons
